Decoupage glue (also known as a decoupage medium or sealer) is an all-in-one adhesive, sealer, and finish used in the craft of decoupage to glue cut-outs of paper or fabric onto various surfaces.
Many crafters tend to use the words “Decoupage Adhesive” and “Decoupage glue or medium” interchangeably, it’s an umbrella term for the craft. As adhesive is a broad, technical word for any substance (like Mod Podge) that joins two surfaces together.

This includes many Decoupage glues, mediums, and sealers. Essentially, this versatile substance serves a triple purpose throughout a creative Decoupage project.
It works by gluing down paper to a surface, sealing additional layers, and finishing with a final clear protective topcoat.
When applying it, the liquid in the glue holds the paper design flat to prevent wrinkles, locks out moisture to protect the artwork, and dries into a durable protective topcoat which is often available in matte, satin, or gloss textures.
The most common types of Decoupage adhesive are Mod Podge, Decopatch, and DIY Decoupage glues made by crafters who dilute budget-friendly PVA glue with small amounts of water.
Many commercial varieties of Decoupage adhesive are specially formulated to increase durability, prevent yellowing over time, and dry in a predictable timeframe between coats.
While handmade and DIY adhesive mixtures offer an affordable alternative for larger projects or kid-friendly crafting, but can dry and cure less predictably.
So whether you are using a specialized brand for delicate napkins and papers, or a simple DIY homemade glue, Decoupage adhesive remain the most important tool you have to create and protect your finished projects.
